Naparima College Interact Club – Hydroponics Initiative

On Friday 27th January 2023, the Interact Club of Naparima College under the guidance of Kevin Nanan from Novo Farms assembled two hydroponics systems underscoring our parent club, Rotary, intent on protecting our common legacy: the environment.

Two of the compact hydroponic units were donated by Mr. Ancel Bhagwandeen, a NAPS alumnus while the third and chemicals for the water formula (listed below) were purchased with funds raised by the Interact Club. A 4th unit will be purchased.

OPERATION:
Compact in design, its vertical layout holds fifty planting spots utilizing just one square meter of floor surface whilst being fully mobile, with plants onboard.
Furthermore, the unit utilizes no soil but clay hydration/balls and oasis horticubes. It is fully digitally automated and monitors moisture. The device’s controller checks this trigger level every 16 minutes determining the minimum dampness level appropriate for the crop. This reduces pump wear and tear and water wastage.
The timer automatically waters seedlings at 8 am, 12 pm, and 5 pm. Seedlings used: Celery, Pak Choy and Lettuce.

GOAL:

To advocate for food security and clean energy by teaching our fellow brothers how to sustainably produce their own food through environmentally responsible energy efficient agriculture, focused on protecting ecosystems.

SPECIAL THANKS:

SURE Foundation, Novo Farms, Mr. Ancel Bhagwandeen and ATLANTIC LNG
